Wunderbaustelle released for the 3rd time 22.02.08

It’s hilarious.

The only existing album of Berlin’s open source music laboratory Girls United called “Wunderbaustelle” got released on handmade CD-r in Feb. 2003 at first and sold 350 copies in just a few months.
A completely improvised mix of synth outbursts, vocal synthesizing, breakbeats, done with a strong phantasy, not waiting, had gotten them a sudden fanbase, mostly in Berlin and around at this point, leading to 40++ live shows in the area within the first year of their existence.

In May 2007 the Florida-based record label dPulse Records then picked up on it, and put the album up on iTunes, ‘distributed’ by Sony/BMG.

As expected, Sony didn’t work for this then. They say it’s been because of restructuring, but obviously it is,
because they only care about a very small percentage of what they release every month in total,
and because their product managers are not music fans, but sales agents. They even think it’s hip to work in the music biz.

Nevertheless, when they were done ‘restructuring’ (dinosaurs!) 8 months after the digital release they suddenly realized they could release the album again.
Working at amazing speed so to say.

So well, since Feb 18 one can find the Girls United debut released for the third time (2nd time digitally) on iTunes and other major online stores again.

Girls United reportedly think, that at least now one can buy the album on iTunes in higher bitrate and without DRM. Otherwise they don’t want to comment on what’s happening, besides they seem to be quite happy, that dPulse released them at all.

It shows again, that reaction times of major labels today are in no way properly following the speed of making and loving of fans and musicians.

I think that’s good.

Please listen again here.

The secret diet of Steve Jobs 24.12.07

As a just recently force-converted ex-OS 9 user (Apfel Komputer) i probably had to run into Steve Jobs’ secret diary at some point soon.

It’s not, that i had major troubles the last weeks to clean up an used ibook under OS 10.4.11, which was still filled with invisible and massively hard disk space-taking ex-owners private data.

I just needed to give myself a UNIX command line treatment for 5 wasted days, before i could locate and finally delete 30 gigabytes of already deleted data, only to be able to use this space again.

All this, while the news are full of Apfel users being ultimately pissed-off of dictatory restrictions to the use of over-prized iPhones, or just flaky security flaws in the newest OS Leopard.

Ah what do i care. But when i got that iBook some weeks ago i had already decided not to ever upgrade a stable configuration, just as i didn’t upgrade my old Pizmo powerbook to anything higher than OS 9.2.2 in five years.
And yeah, it turns out, that, OS 10.4.11 is as stable or unstable as OS 9.2.2.

But still: I really had to laugh out loud, when, a few minutes ago, i found this great fake blog about Mister Apfel-bosses secret thoughts and realized, how just very normal this company is.

→ “Read about, how “THEY” tried to shut down the liberted [and liberating] voice of a person, who just has his/her own and individual view on the company’s issues, blogged in a wonderfully independent and ironic way.”:http://fakesteve.blogspot.com/2007/12/breakfast-with-apple-lawyer.html

500.000 dollars, straight forwardly offered by the wrong person weren’t a threat to this pertinacity, of course, although that may leave the revolting person to a secret and unmentioned financial diet, by Steve Jobs.

Compliments! Great move! Laughter, more laughter.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 / disk utility / erase free space: disk full 7.12.07

Use OSX terminal commands mentioned below on your own risk. The sudo [temporary roots priviledges] command in Terminal means you can potentially wipe your hard disk, when mistyped.

Problem description
Initially: 32 GB space on harddisk left
Operation: “Erase free space” with disk utility [ OS X 10.4.11 ]
Problem: Process interrupted unexpectedly. Large invisible temporary file [here: 29 GB++] appears – 0! bytes space left on harddisk.

Local solution
STEP 1: Restart. Got 3 GB back. Where did another 29 GB go?
STEP 2: Find file by running this in Terminal:
sudo find / -size +10000000000c -print
Result: found file in
/.TemporaryItems/folders.0/TemporaryItems/EFTFile1.sparseimage
STEP 3: Erasing EFTFile1.sparseimage in Terminal with
sudo rm /.TemporaryItems/folders.0/TemporaryItems/EFTFile1.sparseimage

Follow-ups
The culprit file: EFTFile1.sparseimage.
Googling EFTFile1.sparseimage finds more possible locations of the temp file
/var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/EFTFile1.sparseimage
~/.Trash/Recovered files/EFTFile1.sparseimage

Possible software based solution
I didn’t find any. Terminal helps.
EVEN OmniDiskSweeper 1.6 didn’t find the files in question.

Any hintful comments on this?
[Can’t provide support, this is just for your information. I am no geek nor UNIX-proof.]

Max Roach dies at 83 18.08.07

Max Roach is now, after his death on August 15, said (again) to be one of the most influential drummers ever, a giant.

Why is that so?
Well you can read about his death on the N.Y. Times
if they don;t require you to register first. (common bad habit to restrict knowledge).

However, to me he was VERY influential. He f.i. proved the existence of something later called “hip hop” with a very rough and physical drum style in the 40s already (i was -20 years old, about).

But look and listen him solo now (probably from the 80s):
http://www.youtube.com/v/9wnW2KLWE-g

Amazing.
The only drummer besides him, that caught me equally in hip hop type of beat fever long before the term even came up was Jaki Liebezeit, on “Mushroom” on the album Tago-Mago from 1970, but hey: roughly 35 years AFTER Max Roach, who was POP MUSIC in the 40s. People danced, to JAZZ. And they took drugs, oh my. Heroine addiction has cost some of Roach’s fellow musicians their lives in the 50s already. Roach instead, became a political activist and stroke back writing We Insist – Freedom Now in 1960.
He continued on being one of the first improvising musicians on drums proving that this instrument solo can be entirely satisfying to an audience, then in the 1980s.

While today’s music uses drummers mostly as a replacement for the visual boredom of a drum machine on stage it might be time for you now to read up about this genius.

Wikipedia, if a common denominator of knowledge today, can still be a good start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Roach

May he rest now, and in peace.

Thank you Max, and besides all the wonderful hits to my rhythm sensors thank you also for not rapping, not ever.
